(Note: This project is limited to only 35* first-year students.) The Texas Advocacy Project has been providing virtual legal clinics to domestic violence shelters in Texas since 2007. The TAP team is well equipped to provide solution, prevention and empowerment services to survivors and the public through the virtual technology we have been leading for over a decade. During each clinical session with beneficiaries, first-year students will help by noting the legal advice their mentor lawyers give to beneficiaries. In addition to the legal clinic sessions, there will also be two liaison days where freshmen can make new friends through a series of fun activities. There will also be two mentoring sessions where first-year students will have time to interact and learn directly from the lawyers they partner with. This is the best way for our first-year students to learn about pro bono work during practice. For the first time in history, we will establish our own (temporary) legal clinic here on the Bukit Timah campus through an inaugural project called The Legal Clinics Project! Wage theft and worker exploitation are on the rise in Massachusetts.
Fortunately, volunteer lawyers can help. The Volunteer Lawyers Project has partnered with the Attorney General`s Office, Fair Labor Division and various community partners* to combat this issue through our payroll theft clinic. These monthly clinics provide much-needed support to injured employees by providing workers with limited legal advice and outreach activities related to labour rights laws (details). VLCs offer survivors FREE, confidential, face-to-face consultations with lawyers via online technologies. Survivors book an appointment through their local agency and log in from a computer in a private room reserved by the agency. The attorney connects from his office anywhere in the state to provide limited legal advice for about an hour. Sure, it`s simple and it`s empowering. The legal project provides speakers who cover virtually every legal topic that interests your group.
Each workshop is individually tailored to the needs of your group. The lawyers in our community who regularly work in the area of law you are interested in are our speakers. Find out what your rights are and whether bankruptcy is the solution for you. We hold clinics on the first and third Tuesday of each month and schedule additional clinics as needed. * Provide information about other legal resources in the community that you may not be familiar with. This project provides volunteer lawyers for unrepresented low-income debtors to assist them in civil debt collection actions (details). Lawyers of all levels and experience are encouraged to volunteer. We provide training in many areas to prepare lawyers for the types of cases they will handle. For those short on time, we offer one-day and short-term projects that allow lawyers to volunteer for a specific time on a specific day. The commitment shall not extend beyond that date. Lawyers are needed to provide legal assistance to unrepresented applicants in guardianship cases (details).
Volunteer lawyers are needed to provide legal advice and help write briefs on various family law issues such as divorce, custody, paternity, contempt and modification (details). In collaboration with various lawyers from various law firms, as well as several beneficiary charities, the Legal Clinics project aims to improve access to justice by offering these disadvantaged individuals the opportunity to receive personalized legal advice free of charge. First-year students are brought together with practicing lawyers throughout the project and are responsible for assisting these lawyers during clinical sessions. This includes the administrative aspects of the operation and establishment of the legal clinic. This is an invaluable opportunity for first-year students to discover how practitioners use their knowledge of the law to solve real-world problems of ordinary people. Legal Speaking is a free service provided by The Legal Project to community groups and organizations. The goal of our program is to provide community members with the legal information they need in situations where legal representation may not be necessary or where a better understanding of the legal system is needed. Founded by experienced family lawyers Vickie Rothbaum and Robin Murphy, SERV focuses on mediation and helps both parties reach a fair settlement that day.
