This week I did a commercial law internship at Bright Network as part of the Internship Experience UK programme. We heard from leading industry experts (Allen & Overy, Clyde & Co, Herbert Smith Freehills, Sidley Austin LLP and Slaughter and May) on topics such as legal drafting, transaction anatomy, and business research. The seminar on global surveys was particularly fascinating! I gained hands-on experience when I was hired to create a presentation for a fictitious client who wanted to make an acquisition. I advised Farm Fresh on the elements of an acquisition transaction, due diligence considerations, amendments to the NDA and dispute resolution methods. Thank you to the Bright Network team for this invaluable opportunity. #BrightInternUK #InternFromHome The event includes workshops and presentations, leading companies, chambers and in-house legal departments. In addition to providing insight into current issues and building business awareness, case study exercises give you practical insight into the law and help you apply what you`ve learned. Speakers will discuss how to approach the case study and highlight critical elements. Following the diagram, you will receive sample solutions for the case studies. In addition, this program is free and open to all.
It is a kind of mass recruitment. You could probably get away with being even more casual than our recommendations, but we think sometimes making a little effort can help you focus and take the job more seriously. You are unlikely to do your best legal development in your pajamas! • Paul Maddock, Senior Commercial Litigation Partner at DWF • Eoghan McArdle, Legal Counsel in the Enforcement and Litigation Division of the Bank of England • Kirsty Limacher, Private Client Lawyer at Nexa and member of the LGBT+ Lawyers Division Committee at the Law Society Lawyers from a variety of leading law firms, firms and in-house legal teams will lead a variety of workshops and presentations on their areas of expertise. The sessions are designed to enhance your understanding of current issues and increase your business awareness. Meet all the major law firms at our first virtual law fair of the year for new graduate recruitment! The fair is only 5 weeks away and will take place on Thursday 8. September, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.! This is the most read legal website in the UK: legal news, career advice, and market information. They are also the organisers of the UK`s largest and best virtual student events and legal fairs.
To learn more about them, be sure to follow them on LinkedIn and Instagram. Also stay up to date by frequently visiting their website, registering for upcoming events, and more. We also suspect that virtual offers will vary greatly from one law firm to another (legal cheek). Some companies will do a great job of onboarding and engaging students. Others will do a miserable job and students will feel like they have been thrown into the deep end without supervision, or that they don`t have enough work and feel ignored and bored. Successful completion of the Legal Cheek virtual vacation program. This has improved my understanding of the commercial legal market, different areas of law and legal technology. There were also insights into the “hot spots of the 2020s,” including the green economy and countercyclical work. I was particularly motivated by the Employability Expo with the Director of Employability at the University of Law, John Watkins. A big thank you to the Legal Cheek organizers, speakers and thousands of attendees, it was amazing! Project Manager for Legal Technology and Innovation at ULaw If you hear someone apologize to you for making the VAC system or event virtual, don`t complain. Instead, just acknowledge the reality and be optimistic: “Yes, I really wish I could have been in the office meeting everyone properly, but I`m sure it will always be great and I`m really excited to learn more about the company and help the team.” If you`re part of the employment team and you have a free 30-minute window on an afternoon instead of scrolling through your Instagram or Facebook feed, spend time looking for legal updates/blog posts/law firm articles in the space to see if there are any significant new developments. If you can casually stop that you have learned things or that a topic is being brought up in the conversation, your supervisor will be very impressed that you have taken the initiative.
• Poppy Davenport, ULaw Student Ambassador and future intern at CMS • Millie Grundy, ULaw Student Ambassador and future intern at FBC Manby Bowdler LLP • Obanijesu Arije, ULaw Student Ambassador and future articling student at the Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury`s Faculty of Legal and Compliance Services • Grace Coleman, ULaw Student Ambassador studying at LLM LPC • Adam Curphey, Senior Director of Innovation at Mayer Brown • Carrie Brogden, Legal Technologist at TLT • Hugo Cassidy, General Counsel at Pinsent Masons • Patrick Grant, Project Manager for Legal Technology and Innovation at ULaw The #1 most important attribute that Vac students (and apprentices and even junior associates) must demonstrate is that they have a good attitude. Law firms want to make sure you are a good fit, confident for multiple clients, enthusiastic, and willing to work hard when needed. This becomes even more important in a virtual vacation program where your supervisor can`t get to know you as well and you`re both hidden behind screens. When you eventually become a lawyer, you will find that the right answer is only part of the job that your supervisors and clients will be happy with. Another important element is that you give your answers in a timely manner. Since you will be judged more on the quality of your work during the virtual vacation program, you should try to respond to emails as soon as possible. You don`t have to panic or rush to respond immediately after receiving an email, but you also shouldn`t leave unanswered emails in your inbox all day. If you are asked to do a job, most lawyers will appreciate you responding with a quick email confirming that you will process the request and letting them know when you plan to send it back to them. On the way to today`s main topic, The Legal Cheek Virtual Vacation Schemes.
In collaboration with the University of Law, this virtual experience is offered three times a year: spring, summer and winter. What makes it unique is that each experience is never the same, with different speakers and content. • Mark Reynolds, Group Head, Privacy and Risk Management Advisory Services, HSBC • Flora Duguid, Legal Counsel at Meta (formerly Facebook) Other great ways to take advantage of your downtime during the vacation program are to reach out to employees who you think are doing interesting work to see if they would be interested in a virtual coffee or a quick conversation. or prepare your weekend interview for the apprenticeship contract. All sessions take place virtually via the Hopin platform.
