On December 1, a report on the licensure of family law service providers will be presented to the Law Society at convocation. This proposal is extremely little than anything consulted by the public or the profession. The proposed scope is extremely limited and does not reflect the extraordinary work that paralegals have been doing to the public over the past 15 years. I have asked that this be reconsidered and that we consider the consultation model to which many of you have contributed, but without a solid justification, the paralegal profession and the public are ignored. Some of my colleagues point to victory under the idea that something is better than nothing. I think the public deserves more than that. Please look at the convocation on 1. December at 9 a.m. to see who is really advocating for access to justice for the public and who believes paralegals are competent to do much more. Licensed, this is your chance to run as a candidate in the 2023 councillor election. The Law Society is looking for Ontario lawyers and paralegals from all communities, practice settings, areas of work, firm size and geographic location.
