Many lawyers will spend a lot of time revising and correcting English in locally produced documents. Fluency in another language is essential for building relationships at work with colleagues, customers, and potential prospects. However, learning and speaking fluently in a second or third language can enhance career opportunities and allow you to work on legal issues in many situations.

Expanding your public interest job search beyond the United States can significantly expand opportunities geographically and practically. Serving the Public: A Job Search Guide, Volume II – International, a guide commonly used by Duke law students, highlights the many directions lawyers take in their careers in international public service. These include “human rights, diplomacy, foreign relations, consolidation of democracy, economic development, law enforcement, policy development, treaty negotiation and implementation of conventions, as well as all kinds of advocacy and activism with an international focus.” Students focused on the international public interest also have many scholarship opportunities available. These scholarships are highly competitive and the most qualified candidates have, among other things, a proven interest (previous experience) in an international topic of public interest. Interested students are encouraged to seek opportunities to gain experience during law school through faculty research projects, pro bono internships, summer internships, etc. Temple University Location: Rome Dates: May 19 – June 19 Course: International Tax Policy (2 credits); International Sports Law (2 credits); Global Legal Perspectives (1 credit) Tuition: $3,500 tuition; Program fee of $300.
