Law Commission Research Assistant Interview

You can now register for our online outreach event ahead of the 2022-2023 Research Staff Campaign. To learn more about the event, click here. The Ministry of Justice is able to interview qualified candidates who meet the minimum selection criteria, except in a limited number of campaigns. Candidates are not eligible for the reintegration interview program if they apply for promotion. Before the interview, the Legal Committee will tell you in advance to inquire about a particular area of law (and probably to put you in touch with a consultation they have written). I was asked to inquire about Wills (one of the Law Commission`s current projects). I was pretty happy about it, because it`s something everyone should know about – and something I had no idea about – so I saw it from that perspective. They asked me several scenario questions where I had to apply the law in practice, as well as theoretical/reformist questions, i.e. what I would change. This last part is obviously crucial for the Committee on Legal Affairs. Each year, the Legal Commission hires a number of academic staff to make the law simple, modern and fair.

As a Research Associate at the Law Commission, you will master complex areas of law and help shape UK legal reform as part of a team of experts. You will develop a range of skills and gain work experience that is difficult to gain elsewhere. The first thing to fill out is an initial application form. The Law Commission recommends doing it for at least three hours (which I did – and even more!). They use it to weed out candidates and see who can move on to the next level. When I applied last year, I didn`t even get past that stage (but since then I`ve had a lot more experience, like taking on an AR role – thanks to Dr. Kirsty Horsey – and I started my LLM experiences as these were, I think, crucial for an interview). Research associates apply and are assigned to one of four teams: The “Making the Public Service a Great Place to Work for Veterans” initiative includes a guaranteed interview program for those who meet the minimum criteria to give eligible former members of the Armed Forces the opportunity to obtain paid employment. To enable veterans to continue to serve their country and bring into the public service highly qualified individuals with extensive experience in an environment that recognizes and values their previous service in the military.

We will update the website with details of the 2023 Campaign for Research Assistants when applications are open. There is no model candidate we are looking for – often research assistants come to us after a postgraduate degree, professional qualification or later in their career, sometimes directly after completing their undergraduate studies. Keep in mind that you`ll also have access to the Manchester Met`s fantastic career team, who can help you write CVs, application forms, interview techniques and more. Time spent at the Law Commission is highly regarded by employers – our research assistants typically succeed in the legal profession, top law firms, academia and politics. www.lawcom.gov.uk/placements-and-internships/research-assistants/ I`m beyond excited to start in September. In the meantime, I will start researching my thesis, which is expected at the end of August. If someone wants to fill out my survey (which takes an average of eight minutes), I`d really appreciate it. It deals with the definition/term “mother” in UK law and aims to deconstruct it. This work includes a mix of legal research and writing, policy analysis and administrative work.

The Law Commission is the independent statutory body set up to review English and Welsh law and recommend reforms where necessary. Each year, we hire up to 18 research associates to support us in our work to keep the law simple, fair and modern. We announce fixed-term paid research associates each year, who typically sign a one-year contract that begins on or about September. Joining us as an academic is a fantastic opportunity to tackle complex areas of law and help shape legal reform in England and Wales while working side by side with Commissioners. Our academic staff develop a range of skills and gain work experience that is hard to find elsewhere. Within these teams, a research associate primarily works on a project that supports senior counsel – usually a lawyer, lawyer or academic. If you need help with other questions, such as: Your academic suitability for the position, please envoyez-recruitment@lawcommission.gov.uk an email. If you have any further questions, please contact us as soon as possible. There is a Guaranteed Interview Program (GIS) for candidates with disabilities who meet the minimum selection criteria. After the initial application, if successful, there is a written assignment to complete prior to an interview.

The written work, I suppose, varies from year to year. My task was to write a briefing document based on a fictional scenario. Best of all, a wider reading was not required/expected – all you needed was in the document that was sent to you. So it`s basically a sophisticated comprehension test, but you need to make sure you`re really on the ball and understand everything clearly. Honestly, I thought this was the worst part of the application process – in terms of security – because I wasn`t happy with my answer at all! It will be sent to you in the morning and must be emailed back at a certain time on the same day (so it`s best to have the whole day clear!). You can also find a short video that shows what our interviews look like and demonstrates good and bad interview skills. I will be working specifically on the Commonhold project, which is a division of the largest residential lease and common ownership project (within PFT). When I was asked during the interview what my first choice would be, I answered with the surrogacy project (because it is my greatest research interest). Fortunately, I was told that I should be able to have limited work on the surrogacy project for the next six months (the RA role is a 51-week fixed-term contract with the possibility of renewal – which I certainly will). But I`m happy to be working on a completely different project now, as it allows me to try out areas of law that I wouldn`t have thought of otherwise.

The Judicial Commission is an independent body that reviews existing laws (well, those that are part of its “reform agenda” – which is published every few years) and recommends reforms. It aims to make the law fair, modern, simple and cost-effective. The time spent at the Legal Commission is highly valued by professionals/employers, especially in the legal field. And competition for PR roles is fierce; Only 14 to 18 positions are available and more than 300 candidates apply (ranging from undergraduate and graduate students to academics, lawyers, lawyers, etc.). The Legal Affairs Commission is an independent body outside the Department promoted by the Ministry of Justice. More information on the Legal Commission and its work is available on its website www.lawcom.gov.uk/ The Civil Service Act sets the standards of conduct expected of civil servants. 3- To the Public Service Commission (details can be found here) Depending on the stage of a draft, you can examine how the current law works in practice and consider how it should be reformed, help conduct large-scale public consultations or make recommendations to the government and instruct the Parliamentary Council, develop legislation to implement these recommendations. All of these resources are available on the website and here are some tips to help you through the recruitment steps.

from application to membership of the Legal Committee. Also take a look at our resume template, which should be used as a guide to structuring your resume. The civil services are supposed to consider reintegration options before dismissing a person. The Department of Justice is committed to providing opportunities under the redeployment interview program to those at risk of dismissal.
